Flex Spending Accounts for LASIK at Turner Eye Clinic
Now through the end of the year, iLASIK at Turner Eye Clinic is a FULLY COVERED procedure under your Flexible Spending Account (FSA). That represents about $1000 in tax savings for the average patient. Here’s how it works. FSA accounts are set up through employers and funded through payroll deductions. They’re an excellent way to pay for healthcare expenses using pre-tax money. In other words, you can use the money for qualified expenses without having any taxes withheld.
While there previously was not limit on the amount allowed to be set aside, most employers capped the amount at $5,000. Beside the tax advantage of the accounts, the other employee friendly benefit is the access to the amount at the beginning of the plan year. That means you may use the amount you plan to set aside today, even though it will be deducted over a 12 month period through payroll. One potential downside to FSAs is the use it or lose it provision. You generally must use the entire amount set aside in a 12 or 15 month period.
What are the new changes to FSAs?
The major new change to the FSA is a limit of $2,500 commencing with plan years January 1, 2013 and later. Employers may still choose to establish a lower cap so it is important to review your company's plan.
Can I use an FSA for LASIK?
In most plans, LASIK is an allowable medical expense. Commencing with 2013 and the $2,500 cap, a person in the 20% tax bracket would still receive a tax savings of approximately $500.
Are there any other options to help with the amount over $2,500?
Turner Eye Clinic is offering a variety of payment options for their LASIK procedure. Patients may choose from the following options:
